The Da Nang International Marathon (DNIM) 2017 took place at the Eastern Sea Park in Son Tra District on 6 August with the participation of more than 5,000 professional and amateur runners from 44 countries worldwide.

The IAAF-AIMS (International Association of Athletics Federations - Association of International Marathon and Distances Races) certified marathon course involved 4 races: a full marathon (42.195 km), a half marathon (21.0975 km run), a 10 km run, and a 5km (Zody Food5K) run.

Most notably, this year’s race saw the oldest marathoner, Japan’s Noriko Sakota, 72 years old, completed the 42km race in 3:35.39.  Children from Da Nang’s Hoa Mai Orphanage also joined the 5km (Zody Food5K) run under the sponsorship of US veteran Dennis Zaborac.

As a result, Izawa Satoshi from Japan took the first prize in the men’s 42km race, whilst Rafael Pescos from the Philippines and Le Van Tuan from Viet Nam came second and third respectively.

First prize went to Lany Cardona from the Philippines, Kazumi Kinoshita from Japan was in second place, and Sophie Clarke from the UK finished third in the women’s 42km race.

Julien Devanne from France and Hieu Nguyen from Viet Nam took the first and second prizes respectively, whilst Richard Salano from the Philippines came third in the men’s half-marathon.

The top 3 finishers in the women’s half-marathon were Jho An Villarma, Nhea Ann Baroena and Rufa Sorongon, all from the Philippines.

In the men’s 10 km race, Tuan Le, Gian Chau and Dinh Tien, all from Viet Nam, finished in first,  second and third places respectively.

In the women’s 10 km race, the top 3 finishers were Huong Nguyen, Luong Phi, both from Viet Nam, and Jyen Ngu from Malaysia.

The event also raised more than US$21,000 to support handicapped and orphans, victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin, people with disabilities, the Village of Hope and 15 low-income families in the city.  The Silver Strider Club, which is composed of ‘runners and walkers over 50’, also joined the race to promote a healthy lifestyle and to give a voice to older runners and walkers.
