In her opening remark, Viet Nam National Assembly’s Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan stressed that the seminar was a good opportunity for Vietnamese and Lao lawmakers to share their experiences, particularly in developing laws on women and children and gender equality.

Lao National Assembly’s Chairwoman Pany Yathotou said that the seminar was an event of great significance as the two countries would soon celebrate the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties (5 September 1962 - 5 September 2017) and the 40th anniversary of the Friendship and Cooperation Treaty (18 July 1977 - 18 July 2017).

She added that this seminar has special significance in improving the effectiveness of activities by the two nations, particularly the process of institutionalising all issues relating to gender equality and protecting women’s and children’s rights.  Ms. Pany Yathotou also expressed her hope that the seminar would contribute to tightening the special relationship between Viet Nam and Laos in general, as well as ties between female deputies of the two nations.

The one-day seminar focused on three topics comprising the role of female law makers, their experiences in law making, and their experiences in the supervision of laws’ implementation.
