Da Nang International Airport will be upgraded to meet the 4E standards of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) by 2020, and it will continue to be used for both civil and military purposes. The Airport will be able to handle up to 13 million passengers and 50,000 tonnes of cargo each year as well as accommodate 22 parking positions for aircrafts.
This information was envisaged in an adjusted master plan of the Da Nang International Airport towards 2020 with a vision to 2030, and was announced at a ceremony held in the city on 10 October 2015 by the Ministry of Transport.
The airport will feature 2 runways for takeoffs and landings, plus one parallel and 2 rapid-exit taxiways.
The existing passenger terminal, covering an area of 10,000 square metres, will be expanded to have an annual capacity to handle 9 million passengers. In addition, a VIP lounge covering 4,200 square metres and a new 2-storey terminal covering a site of 21,000 square metres will be built to be able to serve 2-4 million passengers per year.
The 11,200m2 administration area will feature working areas for medical quarantine workers, customs officers, border security and police forces, and the aviation port authorities. There will also be areas of 13,000m2 for ground equipment maintenance, 3,000m2 for fire fighting services, and 7,000m2 for aircraft maintenance. The existing area providing aviation fuel will remain unchanged.
Addressing the ceremony, Mr. Lai Xuan Thanh, head of the Civil Aviation Authority of Viet Nam (CAAV), stressed the need to adjust the master plan of the Da Nang International Airport to help ease overload at the airport. He added that the ajdustment is also necessary for Da Nang ahead of the 25th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC 2017) summit, which will take place in the city in October 2017.
