Four or five international teams, plus the host team Viet Nam, will present illumination displays with music on the backdrop of a selected landmark in the city.  There will also be many supporting activities including music and dancing performances, visual arts exhibitions, a gala dinner and services for tourists.

If successful, the city authorities will consider organising this contest every two years on the last Saturday and Sunday of April in even-numbered years, whilst the Da Nang International Fireworks Competition will take place in the odd-numbered years from 2013.

David Atkins was the producer of spectacular displays at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the Doha 2006 Asian Games, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the Outdoor Opening Ceremony of Shanghai 2010 World Expo, which was the largest multimedia display in world history since 1851, and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 12th Arab Games in Doha, Qatar.
