5th Vietnamese – French Open Blood and Marrow Transplantation Conference in Da Nang

The 5th Vietnamese – French Open Blood and Marrow Transplantation Conference officially took place in Da Nang on 17 August.  The event was jointly held by the Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City and the Grenoble University Hospital Centre (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Grenoble) and the Blood Transfusion Center Grenoble, France. 

In attendance were nearly 500 participants including leading professors, doctorate holders and doctors from hospitals nationwide, along with 30 key speakers who are specialists in haematopoietic stem cell transplantation from such foreign countries as France, Belgium, the USA, Japan, Taiwan, China, Singapore and Canada.  

Dr. Yoshihisa Kodera, Chairman of Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (WBMT); Dr. Okamoto Shinichiro, Chairman of the Asia Pacific Blood and Marrow Transplantation Group (APBMT); and Dr. Akihiro Shimosaka, Chairman of the Asian Cellular Therapy Organisation (ACTO) also attended the event.

The 2-day conference featured the latest scientific researches of leading national and international experts in the fields of treatment of hematologic and cancer diseases with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation; treatment of complications of the transplantation, graft, infection, fungal infection, viral infection, transplant reaction; post-transplant life of patients; test, most notably high-tech testing in stem cell transplantation; blood transfusion, blood transfusion in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation; blood bank; stem cell bank, mesenchymal stem cell bank, etc.

Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a potentially curative treatment option in various benign and malignant haematological diseases. 

Dr. Phu Chi Dung, Director of the Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital of Ho Chi Minh Cityreported that said since the first case of marrow transplantation in Viet Nam was successfully performed by his hospital in 1995, more than 286 patients have had stem cell transplantation across the country, and nine centres in nationwide had carried out hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.  He added that Vietnamese doctors are able to perform all procedures of stem cell transplantation.
