Two ships from the Royal Canadian Navy, HMCS Calgary and MV Asterix, with a total of 230 naval officers and sailors onboard arrived at Tien Sa Port on 26 September to begin a five-day visit to the city.  Da Nang People’s Committee Vice Chairman Ho Ky Minh played host to Lieutenant Colonel Blair Saltel, commander of the Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Calgary on the same day.

Also attendance were leading representatives from the Commander of Naval Force Zone No 3, the Foreign Affairs Department of the Defence Ministry, the Military Command and the Border Guard of Da Nang, the Da Nang Department of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Robert Bissett, Chargé d'affaires a.i. at the Embassy of Canada in Viet Nam.

The Vice Chairman highly appreciated the visit by the ships in enhancing the mutual understanding, and exchanging experience in ensuring maritime safety and security, and search and rescue work at sea, between the naval forces of the two countries.  The city leader also asked for help from the Canadian government to give even more support for Da Nang, and Viet Nam as a whole, in ensuring maritime safety and security, and search and rescue work at sea.

Lt Col Blair Saltel thanked the authorities and people of Da Nang for their warm welcome given to the officers and crew members of the Canadian naval ships and emphasised that the highlight of the visit would be a joint maritime activity with the Viet Nam People’s Navy to extend and improve the network of defence partnerships in the region.

The Canadian naval officer added that the visit also aimed to celebrate the 45th anniversary of diplomatic tie between Viet Nam and Canada.  He also hoped that the activities within the framework of the visit would help intensify the close relationship between Canada and Viet Nam as well as between Da Nang and Canadian localities.

It is reported that during their 5-day stay in the city, the ship’s officers and crew members will take part in various exchange activities with Agent Orange-affected and disabled children living at the city’s Care Centre for AO Victims and Disadvantaged Children, and talk with Phan Chau Trinh Senior High School pupils.
