City Leaders Welcomed the Ambassador of the European Union

On the afternoon of December 11th, Chairman of the People's Committee of the City Mr. Huynh Duc Tho had a meeting with the new Ambassador of the European Union (EU) in Viet Nam Mr. Pier Giorgio Aliberti. At the meeting, Chairman Huynh Duc Tho assessed that the relationship between the EU and Viet Nam in general and Da Nang in particular in recent years has made many comprehensive development steps in all fields including economic and trade cooperation, tourism, science and technology, education and training.

Chairman Huynh Duc Tho said that during the period of 2015-2017, the friendship relationship between the EU and Da Nang continued to strengthen and develop, with many delegations from EU countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Germany having visited and worked in Da Nang. The Chairman expressed his hope that the EU would continue to support Da Nang in strengthening cooperation and promoting bilateral relations, in the context of the EU being a major trading partner and a leading investor in Viet Nam.

For his part, Ambassador Aliberti highly appreciated the dynamic development of Da Nang City in recent years, and affirmed that the EU wanted to maintain and further develop relations with Viet Nam in general and with Da Nang in particular. Mr. Aliberti said that the Viet Nam-EU relationship was currently very good, reflected in the signing of many important agreements recently such as the EU-Viet Nam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), the EU-Viet Nam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), and the Framework Participation Agreement (FPA) for Viet Nam’s participation in crisis management activities of the EU. 

In the context of the strong cooperation between the EU and Viet Nam, Ambassador Giorgio Aliberti emphasized that Da Nang City would be a potential partner in many fields. Ambassador Giorgio Aliberti said that the European Union would continue to promote exchange of experience and support the city in environmental protection, minimizing the impact of climate change, as well as developing high technology, building a smart city, etc. This is an area where the EU has much experience and is willing to provide and support Da Nang.

In 2019, export turnover from Da Nang to the EU was estimated at 265 million USD, imports were estimated at 140 million USD. The main export products were textiles, seafood, shipbuilding, children's toys, fishing rods, etc. The main imported products were chemicals, rubber, medicines, etc. In the city, nearly 50 enterprises have regular trade relations with EU countries. Currently, the European Commission is sponsoring Da Nang to implement the Solar Development Project from July 2017 to April 2020 with a total funding of 9.4 billion VND; and supporting the project development at GreenViet Biodiversity Conservation Center (GreenViet) with research, communication, and education activities on biodiversity conservation in the Central Region - Central Highlands.
