Viet Nam – Japan: Try to Reach 2 Million Two-way Exchange of Visitors in 2020

Within the framework of the Japanese Cultural, Economic and Tourism Exchange Delegation, in the morning on 13th January, a conference on promoting Viet Nam – Japan Bilateral tourism  was held in Da Nang City, attracting the participation of hundreds of delegates of the two countries.

At the conference, representatives of Vietnamese and Japanese localities jointly discussed about the number of two-way exchange visitors between localities of the two countries. At the same time, the two sides also agreed to continue strengthening promotion activities in order to achieve the goal of increasing the number of two-way exchange visitors.

President of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) Seino Satoshi said that Viet Nam is the country chosen to host a large-scale opening event in 2020. In which, tourism is a large field of the two countries. Viet Nam and Japan also have a long-standing relationship. Four hundred years ago, many Japanese traders came to Hoi An to trade and exchange. Since then, the two countries have had trade relations of mutual trust which opened many future achievements.


Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien emphasized that tourism promotion agencies, localities and tourism companies from the two countries need to continue exchanging and proposing new cooperation programs in the coming time

Commissioner of the Japan Tourism Agency Tabata Hiroshi assessed Viet Nam as a large market among the 20 key markets of Japan around the world.

 “I am sure this year, the governments of the two countries will achieve the goal of increasing the number of visitors. From 1st January, Japan Tourism Agency has launched many attractive advertising programs to attract more Vietnamese tourists to come to Japan. We have also considered easing entry procedures; have created an environment of multilingual languages without  barriers, helping the elderly and disabled people to travel to Japan more conveniently ", said Mr. Tabata Hiroshi.

At the conference, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien said that after nearly 47 years of establishing diplomatic relations, the friendship and cooperation between Viet Nam and Japan has been constantly strengthened and expanded in all sectors. The two countries have become strategic partners and are currently in the best development phase ever. Viet Nam is a very close country and has many similarities with the Japanese people. Viet Nam's tourism products are very diverse from cultural, heritage and eco-tourism products to high-class marine tourism products stretching from the North to the South, suitable to the interests of Japanese.

According to the statistics of JNTO and the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism, in the past 10 years, Japanese visitors to Viet Nam have increased continuously, with an average growth rate of 8-10%. The total number of two-way visitors between Japan and Viet Nam in 2019 reached 1,447,000 (an increase of 18.9% compared to 2018), Vietnamese visitors to Japan reached 495,000 (a 27.3% increase), Japanese visitors to Viet Nam reached about 952,000 (increase 15.2%). This is the highest increase in the past years.

Minister Nguyen Ngoc Thien further informed that in 2019, Viet Nam welcomed nearly 1 million Japanese visitors and the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan in the first 11 months of 2019 reached nearly 500,000 visitors. Japan is becoming the most attractive destination for Vietnamese tourists. In the coming time, exchange of visitors between the two countries will continue to develop.

To get the above results, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Viet Nam has recently implemented many cooperation activities, promoting culture and tourism between Viet Nam and Japan. The Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism has actively cooperated with the Japan Tourism Agency through the meeting of the Tourism Cooperation Committee of the two countries, signing cooperation documents in the field of tourism between the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism and agencies, associations and localities of Japan, as well as organizing many programs to introduce Viet Nam tourism in localities of Japan such as Tokyo, Kanagawa, Hokkaido, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. Cooperation in promoting tourism between localities of Viet Nam and Japan is being expanded, including cooperation between Ha Noi and Tokyo to promote Ha Noi tourism at the subway in Tokyo and promoting tourism of Tokyo on the main streets and media of Ha Noi.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism highly appreciated the recent efforts of the tourism promotion agencies between the two countries. The two parties have constantly cooperated and promoted the exchange of visitors between the two countries, along with mutual assistance in successfully organizing many tourism events in the two countries.

Minister Nguyen Ngoc Thien emphasized that on this occasion, the national tourism promotion agencies of the two countries, localities and tourism enterprises should continue exchanging and proposing new cooperation programs in the coming time. Striving in 2020 so the exchange of visitors between the two countries will reach the goal of 2 million, making a positive contribution to the development of cooperation, cultural exchanges and friendship between the two countries.

To achieve this goal, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism proposed that the two sides continue promoting the implementation of the contents signed by the two sides; maintain regular exchange of information about markets, products, and needs of visitors; and the Governments of the two countries continue to create favorable conditions for the exchange of visitors and mutual assistance in tourism promotion programs in Viet Nam and Japan.
