An official ceremony to welcome the Recognition Certificate and honour this banyan tree as a National Heritage Tree will be held by the Da Nang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development at Son Tra Natural Reserve on 8 June. The event will be one of the activities to be held from 1 to 8 June in response to the World Environment Day 2014.
The 800-year-old banyan tree (Ficus bengalensis) stands 25 metres (82 feet) tall and has 26 aerial roots. It is considered as one of the country’s oldest tree of its species. This tree and the other species of the family Moraceae not only have a high tourism value, but they are also considered to be an important food source for the endangered red-shanked douc langurs (Pygathrix nemaeus), the world’s rare primates which live on the peninsula.
